Drink Juice – Feel Health

If you are searching for a way to improve your health and demand a better quality of life than the one you are living, drinking juice could be just the thing. So many of us are looking for ways to have more energy, increase our motivation, achieve clearer skin, have brighter eyes, lose some weight, improve our digestion, and reduce symptoms of chronic conditions, e.g. candida. Juicing isn’t like a drug that targets just one problem, juicing can help us deal with them all!

In my own experience juicing over the last 18 years, drinking juice has helped me with all of the above. So if you are considering doing a juice cleanse for your health, I can give you some awesome juicer recipes!

My Story

Almost 20 years ago, my brother, sister and myself bought our parents a Magimix Le Duo juicer for their wedding anniversary. Little did I know at that time how this gift was going to change my life in so many ways.

Even though it was our parents’ juicer, it was used by the whole family. Whenever we were all at home for dinner, we would regularly get the juicer out and create a fruit bowl recipe. Basically throwing in whatever fruit we had along with some vegetables from the fridge. It became a kind of family ritual. There was always a good vibe when we had juice and I have happy memories of juicing together.

When I went travelling after university, I remember visiting my first ever juice bar on Oxford Street in Sydney, Australia. Their climate meant that there were juice bars all over the place. I remember being unsure about what to order when the guy in front of me went for a Carrot, Orange & Ginger juice. I liked the sound of that so decided to get the same. It has been one of my favourite juice recipes ever since!

Moving down to London in 2000, I fell out of the juicing habit and wasn’t always getting my 5 a day. Being in my 20s, consuming an optimal diet wasn’t something I gave any consideration. Instead, drinking, smoking and late nights seemed more of a priority.

After visiting Japan for the 2002 World Cup and falling in love with the country, I decided to quit my job in IT and move over there and teach English.

The Japanese diet is, in general, much healthier than the standard U.K. diet. They eat less processed foods; less meat; and more fruits, vegetables and seaweed. There is no such thing as the 5 a day campaign in Japan. Statistics in Japan suggest that Japanese people typically consume around 13 servings of fruit and vegetables a day!

From December to March is the Japanese mikan (mandarin orange) season. They are sold in 10kg boxes at supermarkets for really good prices, but there are only so many you can eat! That’s when I remembered our family juicer and thought it might be a good idea to re-invest in another Magimix! Drinking a daily juice at breakfast time had a noticeable effect on how I felt – and I liked it.

Getting Sick

Teaching English in Japan at Elementary School was an amazing experience. The kids were always really excited and for the most part were very enthusiastic about learning. But working in this environment had a surprising consequence.

In April 2010, I remember going to bed on a Sunday evening thinking I didn’t feel too good. Then when I woke up I had swollen glands in my neck, and I started to wonder what was going on. Then when I got up, I had to rush to the bathroom to be sick. For someone who didn’t get sick, I was starting to worry. So thought I should go and see a doctor just to make sure it was nothing serious.

Turns out it was kind of serious! The mayor, who happened to be a doctor, felt my neck and told me I had mumps. When I told him I’d been immunised, he just laughed and said it’s only about 70-80% effective! In Japan, the MMR vaccine was banned in 1993 and there is no national program immunising against mumps. So they just let the kids get it, they’re off school for a little bit, and there’s no major issue. Unless you’re a foreigner (particularly a man) who hasn’t had mumps! Your glands swell to painful proportions, all your glands! I was having so much difficulty swallowing that I didn’t drink enough fluids and ended up being admitted to hospital seriously dehydrated with a temperature over 100°F. I remember lying on a trolly while they were drawing blood and giving me a drip, thinking – I could just die now and then at least this pain would be over.

I was off work for 2 weeks and it was at least another month before I started to feel like I was back to normal. The experience made me understand the meaning of the saying – Health is Wealth. Without our health, we literally have nothing! Never wanting to feel that bad again, I promised myself that I would do everything within my power to live as healthfully as possible. A huge part of that I was sure had to be our diet. I knew that juice in the morning made me feel good, so why not eat more fruit and drink more juice?

Moving on

As I continued to increase the amount of juice I drank, I invested in a Hurom Slow Juicer which seemed to make a richer juice than my centrifugal Magimix. Drinking more juice was improving my mental clarity, quality of sleep and my digestion was working a treat. I was becoming more and more convinced of the power of fresh fruit and vegetable juice.

Then in 2013 I visited New York to attend the Woodstock Fruit Festival. There were juice bars all over New York City which made me realise how popular juicing was becoming all over the world.

Living in Japan had taught me the importance of diet to both physical and mental well being, and as daily juicing was part of my life, I decided to return to Scotland to share my love of juicing.

The shop was open for a year and a half from mid-2014 to the end of 2015. I’m glad to have had the chance to inspire my customers to drink and make more juice! At the shop I used a variety of juicers, from a Norwalk juicer to create juice cleanse packages – to Omega and Froothie masticating juicers. Making juices professionally for 18 months gave me plenty of time to perfect a load of juice, smoothie, nut milk and raw food recipes.

Running a business is no joke and the financial pressures took some of the fun out of juice and smoothie creation. Closing the shop was an easy decision to make, I wasn’t doing it for the money, but after taking care of the costs, I was essentially working for nothing. This website gives me a chance to reach a wider audience and inspire you to become the healthiest you can be!
